close, and this prevents the re-oxygenated blood in your aorta from flowing back into your ventricle again. \u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have <strong>aortic valve regurgitation<\/strong> (also commonly known as <strong>aortic regurgitation<\/strong> or<strong> aortic insufficiency<\/strong>) that means your aortic valve is leaking and some of the blood that your left ventricle pumps out into your aorta when it contracts is being sucked back into your ventricle again as it relaxes and expands.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Aortic valve regurgitation<\/strong> prevents your heart from pumping efficiently and it forces your heart muscle to work much harder than it should.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may be born with a valve problem that predisposes you to developing <strong>aortic valve regurgitation<\/strong>, or you may develop it as a result of infection, trauma, or some kind of cardiovascular disease.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> If your condition is severe, you may need to have surgery to repair or replace your aortic cause of <strong>aortic valve regurgitation<\/strong> is a bicuspid aortic valve. (If you have a bicuspid valve that means your aortic valve has two leaflets, or cusps, instead of the normal three.)<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">About 1% of people are born with bicuspid aortic valves and a small proportion of those people will go on to develop valve problems later in life.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most common acquired, or non-genetic, cause is valve degeneration and stenosis as a result of normal aging. The older we get, the more likely we are to develop heart valve problems.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prior to the development of effective antibiotics, rheumatic heart disease, which is an inflammatory condition resulting from untreated strep throat, was one of the most frequent causes of <strong>aortic valve regurgitation<\/strong>. Inflammation of the heart can damage the valves and is very dangerous. Rheumatic heart disease is now rare in the developed world, but it can still be a problem in developing nations.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>Some risk factors for <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>aortic valve regurgitation<\/strong> take years, or decades, to<\/span> cause problems. People with bicuspid valves might develop regurgitation in their 50s, those with rheumatic valve damage in their 30s, and those with stenosis in their 60s or older.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-1ac15bfc\" data-id=\"1ac15bfc\" data-element_type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2719af6c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"2719af6c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to the long-term causes of <strong>aortic valve regurgitation, <\/strong>there are a few disorders that can cause it quite suddenly, or acutely, like endocarditis or an aortic dissection.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Common long-term causes of <strong>aortic valve regurgitation <\/strong>include:<\/span><\/p><ul><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/heart-explained.org\/index.php\/aortic-valve-stenosis\/\">Aortic valve stenosis<\/a>: Stiffening and thickening of the aortic valve\u2019s leaflets. This can happen with normal aging<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A bicuspid aortic valve: This is a relatively common congenital heart problem that increases your risk of developing aortic valve problems later in life<\/span><\/li><li>Rheumatic valve disease<\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tertiary syphilis<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aortic aneurysm<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p>Acute, or sudden, causes of <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>aortic valve regurgitation<\/strong> include:<\/span><\/p><ul><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Endocarditis: An infection of the heart\u2019s chambers and valves\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Injury or trauma<\/span><\/li><li><span
