400;\">First, a little information about your mitral valve and what it does:<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your mitral valve lies between your left atrium and your left ventricle.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It has two leaflets, or flaps, that open to allow re-oxygenated blood to flow from your atrium into your ventricle. It may often be an inherited disorder, and it does seem to run in families.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to congenital defects, there are a number of diseases and disorders that are associated with <strong>mitral valve prolapse<\/strong>. These include Graves&#8217; disease, muscular dystrophy, and scoliosis. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, people who have abnormal cartilage (for example, a connective tissue disease like Marfan syndrome) are at higher risk of developing <strong>mitral valve prolapse<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-top-column 400;\">Connective tissue disease (for example, Marfan syndrome)<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Valve damage as a result of a <a href=\"https:\/\/heart-explained.org\/index.php\/heart-attack\/\">heart attack<\/a> or infection\u00a0<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Graves\u2019 disease (a thyroid disorder), experiencing symptoms, they may include:<\/span><\/p><ul><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chest pain: This may be worrying, but it\u2019s not associated with an increased risk of heart attack or other heart problems<\/span><\/li><li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unusual slenderness: People with mitral valve prolapse are often very slim; no one knows pain<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mitral regurgitation may lead to heart failure, and if that happens your symptoms may also include tiredness and swollen feet and
