{"id":5024,"date":"2023-05-11T13:51:01","date_gmt":"2023-05-11T12:51:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/heart-explained.org\/?page_id=5024"},"modified":"2025-03-21T17:05:02","modified_gmt":"2025-03-21T17:05:02","slug":"supraventricular-tachycardia","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/heart-explained.org\/index.php\/supraventricular-tachycardia\/","title":{"rendered":"Supraventricular tachycardia"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5>Arrhythmias<\/h5>\n<h1>Supraventricular tachycardia<\/h1>\n<h2>What is supraventricular tachycardia?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Supraventricular tachycardia (SVT) <\/strong>is a type of arrhythmia, or <strong>heart rhythm disturbance,<\/strong> t<strong>hat arises in the atria (which are above the ventricles, or &#8220;supraventricular&#8221;) and causes the heart to beat too quickly (tachycardia). <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><b>Heart contractions: SVT (AVNRT) vs normal heart<\/b><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<iframe loading=\"lazy\" \n    width=\"400\" \n    height=\"550\"\n    data-static=\"https:\/\/heart-explained.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/stats\/b\/b4_03_002.gif\"\n    data-animated=\"https:\/\/heart-explained.org\/anims\/b4_03\/b4_03_002.html\"\n    src=\"https:\/\/heart-explained.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/stats\/b\/b4_03_002.gif\"\n    frameborder=\"0\" \n    title=\"heart with  supraventricular tachycardia\"><br \/>\n<\/iframe>\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>The most common form of <strong>SVT<\/strong> is a disorder called atrioventricular nodal re-entrant tachycardia (which is, thankfully, abbreviated to AVNRT)<strong>. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Approximately 95% of all cases of supraventricular tachycardia are caused by AVNRT, and so that&#8217;s the specific kind of SVT we&#8217;ll discuss in this section. <\/p>\n<p>In <strong>SVT<\/strong> the two upper chambers of the heart (the atria) sometimes beat very rapidly, usually 140 &#8211; 240 beats per minute. The ventricles beat more slowly, but the result is a heart rate of 100 beats per minute or more.<\/p>\n<p>A normal heart rate is 60 &#8211; 100 beats per minute.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Episodes of <strong>SVT<\/strong> may be brief, and may begin and end quite suddenly.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SVT<\/strong> is more common in women than men and it often occurs in quite young adults.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;d like to learn about a normal heartbeat and how your heart functions, take a look at <strong>Your heart: The basics<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2>What causes SVT?<\/h2>\n<p>Your heartbeat is regulated by complex electrical signals. The signals are controlled by the heart\u2019s sinoatrial (SA) node, which is in the right atrium.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>With each heartbeat, the SA node fires an electrical pulse that spreads down through the heart to the atrioventricular (AV) node and the ventricles, and causes it to contract in an organized way.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In the AVNRT form of<strong> SVT<\/strong>\u00a0the electrical signal that initiates an atrial contraction is sent prematurely, and it travels around a small extra circuit called a re-entrant or re-entry circuit. This circuit is something you&#8217;re born with. The signal sometimes then runs around and around the circuit and causes sudden very rapid heartbeats (tachycardia).\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If you have an AV nodal re-entrant circuit, you may have episodes of <strong>SVT<\/strong> when something triggers an attack. But if your doctor recommends it, here are some standard options. The first, vagal maneuvers, you can do yourself: <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Vagal maneuvers such as coughing, or holding your breath and straining<\/li>\n<li>Medications to control your heart&#8217;s rate and rhythm<\/li>\n<li>Cardioversion (a small shock to the chest that resets the heart\u2019s rhythm)<\/li>\n<li>A catheter-based procedure called cardiac ablation (if medications and cardioversion don\u2019t help)<\/li>\n<li>Avoiding stimulants like caffeine and decongestants<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What are the aims of treatment?<\/h2>\n<p>The immediate aims of treatment are to reset the rhythm of your heart and slow your heart rate.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Most people with <strong>SVT<\/strong> experience no long-term ill effects, but your doctor may suggest treatment if there is reason to worry about serious but rare complications like cardiac arrest.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Arrhythmias Supraventricular tachycardia What is supraventricular tachycardia?
